Devine: IBW = 50 + 2.3 × (height_in − 60) [male] | 45.5 + 2.3 × (height_in − 60) [female]

Variables

IBWIdeal Body Weight in kg
height_inHeight in inches (converted internally from cm if needed)
50 / 45.5Base weight for 5 ft (60 inches) — male / female
2.3kg added per inch above 5 ft

Explanation

Four medical formulas are used in clinical practice to estimate ideal body weight. Devine (1974) is the oldest and most widely used. Robinson (1983), Miller (1983), and Hamwi (1964) are alternatives with slightly different baselines. The BMI range (18.5–24.9 kg/m²) provides an additional reference. No single formula is perfect for everyone — use the average as a guide.

What is the Ideal Weight Calculator?

Ideal body weight (IBW) has been used in medicine for decades — primarily for calculating drug doses, ventilator settings, and nutritional targets. This calculator applies the four most widely referenced clinical formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi) alongside the BMI healthy weight range, giving you a comprehensive picture of what a healthy weight looks like for your height and sex.

How to Use This Calculator

Select your unit system and biological sex, enter your height, and the calculator instantly applies all four formulas. Results are shown individually so you can see the range, plus an average and the BMI-based healthy weight range for comparison.

Why Use MyCalculatorsHub's Ideal Weight Calculator?

Seeing four formulas side-by-side shows that 'ideal weight' is a range, not a single number — typically spanning 3–6 kg between the lowest and highest formula. This is useful context: if you are within that range, you are doing well regardless of which formula you use as a reference.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is treating the ideal weight as a hard target. These formulas ignore muscle mass, bone density, age, and ethnicity. A bodybuilder and a sedentary person of the same height will have very different ideal weights in practice. Use this as a starting reference, not a strict goal.
