Results are estimates for general fitness tracking. Actual step length varies with height, pace, terrain and fitness.
Miles = Steps × Step length (ft) ÷ 5,280StepsYour step countStep lengthHeel-to-heel distance of one step, in feet5,280Feet in one mile0.413 / 0.415Height multipliers for women / menDistance is your step count multiplied by your step length. One mile is exactly 5,280 feet. The quick average uses 2.2 ft for women and 2.5 ft for men. The height option estimates step length as height × 0.413 for women or × 0.415 for men. Both are rules of thumb, so a measured step is the most accurate choice.
How many miles is 10,000 steps? It depends on your step length, so a single fixed answer is often off. This calculator converts your steps to miles and kilometres at three levels of accuracy: a quick average based on sex, an estimate from your height, or your own measured step. It also works in reverse for planning how many steps a walk will take.
Enter your step count and choose an accuracy level. The quick average needs only your sex, the height option estimates your step length, and the measured option uses a number you've measured yourself. The result shows miles and kilometres, your steps per mile, and the working with your numbers. Switch to Miles → steps to convert the other way.

You hit a 10,000-step goal and use the quick average for a man.
10,000 steps is about 4.73 miles (7.62 km).
A woman who is 5 ft 7 in tall walks 8,000 steps and uses the height option.
8,000 steps is about 3.49 miles (5.62 km).
You measured your step at 30 inches and want to plan a 3-mile route.
A 3-mile walk is about 6,336 steps.
Fitness trackers often rely on an estimated step length, and generic conversion charts assume one person's stride. Using your own height or measured step gives you a figure that applies to you, and the steps-per-mile number lets you do quick conversions later without a calculator.
The most common mistake is entering stride length as step length. A stride is two steps, so it doubles your distance if you use it here. Treat the result as an estimate too: step length shortens on hills and in crowds and lengthens when you walk faster or run, so measure at the pace you usually walk.
