Work Hours Calculator

Add up the hours you worked from start and end times, minus breaks, in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, for a day or a full week with overtime and pay.

StartEnd

Type 9:00, 17:30 or 5:30pm. An end time earlier than the start counts as past midnight.

Minutes to deduct. Not needed if you entered separate periods around your break.

Add your hourly pay to see what the hours are worth.

Enter a start and an end time to see your total.

What is the Work Hours Calculator?

This work hours calculator adds up the time between your start and end times and gives the total in two forms: hours and minutes (7h 50m) and decimal hours (7.83), the format most payroll systems and invoices use. It handles split shifts, unpaid breaks and shifts that run past midnight. Switch to the week timesheet to total Monday to Sunday, split the week into regular time and overtime, and see your pay.

How to Use This Calculator

In One day, type a start and an end time for each period you worked, for example 8:45 to 12:15 and 1:00pm to 5:20pm. Add as many periods as you need, untick any you want to leave out, and enter an unpaid break in minutes if you didn't split the day around it. In Week timesheet, enter a start, end and break for each day; the week is saved in your browser so you can fill it in day by day. Add / subtract works with durations, for example how many hours are left when 32h 45m of a 40-hour week is done.

Worked Examples

Split shift with pay

You worked 8:45am to 12:15pm and 1:00pm to 5:20pm, paid $18.50 an hour.

Morning
12:15 − 8:45 = 3h 30m
Afternoon
5:20 − 1:00 = 4h 20m
Total
3h 30m + 4h 20m = 7h 50m
Decimal
50 ÷ 60 = 0.83 → 7.83 hours
Pay
7.8333 × $18.50 = $144.92

7h 50m (7.83 hours), worth $144.92

The pay uses the unrounded 7.8333 hours; multiplying the rounded 7.83 would give $144.86.

Night shift past midnight

You started at 10:00pm, finished at 6:30am and took a 30-minute unpaid break.

Shift
6:30am + 24h − 10:00pm = 8h 30m
Break
8h 30m − 30m = 8h 00m

8h 00m (8.00 hours)

Week with overtime

Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:30pm with a 30-minute lunch, paid $20 an hour with time and a half after 40 hours.

Each day
9h 30m − 30m = 9h 00m
Week
5 × 9h = 45h
Regular
40h × $20 = $800
Overtime
5h × $30 = $150

45 hours: 40 regular + 5 overtime, $950 gross

Why Use MyCalculatorsHub's Work Hours Calculator?

You can type times the way you think of them (9, 9:30, 930 or 5:30pm), shifts past midnight are handled for you, and the working is listed line by line so you can check it against a time card. Decimal hours are rounded only once, at the end, so the total does not drift the way it does when you round each day. Nothing is sent to a server.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most common mistake is treating minutes as a decimal: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, not 7.3. Divide the minutes by 60 instead. Another is rounding each day to two decimals and then adding the days, which can put the weekly total a few hundredths out; add the minutes first, then convert. Finally, remember that a shift from 10pm to 6am is 8 hours, not a negative number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate hours worked?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. For 8:30am to 5:00pm with a 30-minute lunch: 8h 30m − 30m = 8 hours. For several shifts, work out each one and add them up.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75 and 20 minutes is 0.33. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.

What is 7 hours 30 minutes in decimal?

7.5 hours (30 ÷ 60 = 0.5). A common slip is writing 7.30, which would mean 7 hours 18 minutes.

How do I count hours for a shift that goes past midnight?

Add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting. 10:00pm to 6:00am is (6 + 24) − 22 = 8 hours. The calculator does this automatically whenever the end time is earlier than the start.

Is a lunch break counted as hours worked?

Under US federal rules, a meal period of 30 minutes or more in which you are fully relieved of duty is usually unpaid, while short breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes count as work time. State law and your contract can differ, so enter only the unpaid part as a break.

How is overtime calculated?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states add daily overtime (California, for example, after 8 hours in a day). The week timesheet lets you change the threshold and the multiplier.

How many working hours are in a year?

A 40-hour week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. A 37.5-hour week is 1,950 hours. Holidays and paid leave are included in those figures, not subtracted.

How do I work out my pay from my hours?

Convert the hours to decimal and multiply by your hourly rate: 7h 50m is 7.83 hours, and at $18.50 that is $144.92. The result is gross pay, before tax and deductions.

Why is the decimal total different from adding each day's decimals?

Because each day's decimal is rounded. Adding three days of 20 minutes as 0.33 + 0.33 + 0.33 gives 0.99, but the true total is 60 minutes, exactly 1.00 hour. The calculator adds the minutes first and rounds once.

Is my timesheet saved?

The week timesheet is saved in your own browser so it is still there when you come back. It is never sent to us; clearing your browser data or pressing Clear week removes it.

How We Calculate

Times are converted to minutes after midnight. Each period is end minus start; when the end is earlier than the start, 24 hours are added because the shift crossed midnight. Periods are added, unpaid breaks are subtracted, and the total is shown in hours and minutes and in decimal hours (minutes ÷ 60), rounded to two decimals only at the end. Overtime is the time above the weekly threshold you set (40 hours by default, the US federal rule) paid at your multiplier (1.5 by default). Pay is gross, before tax and deductions; rules vary by state, country and contract.
